Saint Pierre (Anchorage)

Coordinates: 014° 44.346' N , 061° 10.656' W
Country: Martinique

Description

A very scenic anchorage, well sheltered with calm waters, and manageable depts. Saint Pierre is a charming town bursting with art, history and a nice collection of bars and restaurants. The old town was destroyed in the 1902 eruption of Mt. Pelee.

Anchor: good holding in black sand in 8-10 m, either north (better) or south (stay away from the fishing boats) of the town dock. You will need to anchor quite close to the beach as the shoreline is steep. Good protection from the prevailing winds but with north to northeasterly winds the swell will make the anchorage uncomfortable.

Don't miss:

  • take a bus to the hiking grounds of Mount Pelee, the views from the observation area are spectacular.
  • there is a museum about the eruption and the ruins of an old theatre that worth visiting.
