The once commercial salt production lake is now a nature reserve and an important site for many different kinds of wildlife ranging from Flamingo to aquatic invertebrates and fish to wild flowers. Some of the old salt collection equipment is to be seen gently rusting on the sides of the lake. Salt was collected in wagons which ran on rails between the salt pans and some of these are still present. The reserve is important resting and feeding place for migrant birds in Spring and Autumn. Take a pair of binoculars and be sure to read the information boards which are in both Italien and English.
