Currents at the river mouth run up to 3kt, and tidal range at springs is 2.7m.
The river charts are outdated and the river is no longer buoyed. It is recommended following the published waypoints or getting a pilot to navigate the river, Malcolm (+592 670 9575, recommended by s/y Dreamtime Wanderer) or Dominic (via Kit Nascimento, +592 6404497 or firstname.lastname@example.org).
There are two channels recommended for cruising yachts:
The channels converge at Lau Lau Island. Both channels are not difficult but the West Channel is the easier and deeper of the two and offers better protection from the prevailing swell.
Depths from Lau Lau Island to Bartica are at least 2.3m + tide. It is recommended you enter the river during the day as there are numerous fishing stakes and nets along the way.
