Country: Guyana

Description

Currents at the river mouth run up to 3kt, and tidal range at springs is 2.7m.

The river charts are outdated and the river is no longer buoyed. It is recommended following the published waypoints or getting a pilot to navigate the river, Malcolm (+592 670 9575, recommended by s/y Dreamtime Wanderer) or Dominic (via Kit Nascimento, +592 6404497 or kitnasc@gmail.com).

There are two channels recommended for cruising yachts:

  • From Suriname: take the South Channel; take the old Ship Channel initially and then stay close to the shoreline of the southern bank. Depths are at least 2.1m + tide, over the bar between the waypoint (7°00’.99N 58°11’.36W) and the first islands in the river.
  • From Trinidad: take the West Channel. Depths are at least 2.6m + tide over the bar.

The channels converge at Lau Lau Island. Both channels are not difficult but the West Channel is the easier and deeper of the two and offers better protection from the prevailing swell.

Depths from Lau Lau Island to Bartica are at least 2.3m + tide. It is recommended you enter the river during the day as there are numerous fishing stakes and nets along the way.
