Sassari is a genuine city of Sardinia, a few miles inshore from Castelsardo and Porto Torres. It has a very interesting medieval centre and some modern areas. It's a really pleasant town, though not a big tourist destination, which makes it even better. There are great museum in Sassari, a lot of things to do and fine shopping too.
- the medieval quarter is all alleys and piazzas clustered around the inevitable cathedral (duomo);
- in penultimate Sunday of May, the Ascension, La Cavalcata Sarda, a colourful horse parade; horsemanship is the theme, with parades, decorated costumes, dashing equestrian feats and traditional song and dance in one of the piazzas.
- visit the Sanna Museum with its amazing collection of Nuraghic artefacts. The Nuragh peoples were advanced Neolithic - bronze age folk, who built enduring giant stone fortresses which remain as their outstanding monument.
